Khelo India University Games
In recent years, the state of Odisha has become a hub for major sporting events such as the Asian Athletics Championships, Men’s Hockey World Cup, Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, FIH Series Finals, and Hockey Olympic Qualifiers. These events also feature Indian university sportsmen who participate in a national multi-sport tournament. The Khelo India University Games, which is India’s largest university-level sporting event, was first held in Odisha in 2020 with subsequent editions in 2022 and an upcoming one. However, for the purposes of today’s post, we will only be presenting games listed in the table.
Khelo India University Games 1st Edition
The 2020 sporting event showcased 211 events across 17 distinct sports, and was held from February 22nd to March 1st. Competitions took place across several venues in Cuttack, including the SAI International Residential School, JNL Indoor Stadium, SAI-Odisha Badminton Academy, and Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology. Nearly 4000 athletes from 176 different institutions participated in the games, resulting in the awarding of 206 gold medals, 206 silver medals, and 286 bronze medals.
Khelo India University Games Objectives
The Khelo India University Games were established to create a platform for India’s youth to showcase their athletic prowess at the university level. The ultimate aim of the event is to identify and nurture top talent between the ages of 18 and 25 by providing them with training and opportunities to prepare for future major international events such as the Olympics and the Asian Games.
