Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin McDonagh has lashed out at No campaigners after a clip from his movie Seven Psychopaths featured in social media posts forward of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum.

Main No marketing campaign group Honest Australia shared the clip on social media with a picture of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese superimposed over the face of the character Paulo, performed by Zeljko Ivanek.

Albanese was depicted sporting a Sure badge within the doctored clip, wherein Paulo threatens the character Hans – performed by Christopher Walken – with a gun and asks him to place his arms up.
Hans refuses to take action regardless of the weapon.

The Honest Australia social media put up was accompanied by the message: “Do not allow them to bully you. Vote NO to the Voice of Division.”


McDonagh instructed Guardian Australia he wasn’t conscious the clip was used within the ‘no’ marketing campaign and the posts seemed to be “deliberate copyright infringement by a bunch of rightwing swine”.
